A man was in critical condition after his Corvette rolled 150 feet off I-15 down a steep mountainside near the Virgin River Gorge on Friday, Jan. 25, 2019.

LITTLEFIELD, Ariz. — The driver of a Corvette that drove off I-15 near the Virgin River Gorge and rolled 150 feet down the steep mountain had to be rescued on Friday.

The crash happened just before 4:30 p.m. between St. George and Mesquite, Nevada. A Corvette went "over the side and down the mountainside," according to a statement from the Beaver Dam/Littlefield Fire Department.

"Crews worked their way to the victim, provided advanced life support, and utilized a low angle rope rescue system for extrication," the department stated.

A man was taken to a local hospital in critical condition, according to the department. What caused the car to go off the road was still under investigation Sunday. A spokesman with the Arizona Department of Public Safety told StGeorgeUtah.com that excessive speed was likely a factor. He also said if another motorist had not witnessed the car go off the road, the man may have died before the crash was discovered.
