SALT LAKE CITY — A man is in critical condition after he was hit crossing the street on his bicycle in a hit-and-run crash Tuesday night, police said.

A white car, possibly a Nissan, struck the bicyclist at 1033 West and 400 South in Salt Lake City at 6:08 p.m., police confirmed.

Salt Lake Police Lt. Mike Hatch said the bicyclist was crossing 400 South when the driver, coming eastbound on 400 South, hit the man and fled the scene. He confirmed a police investigation is underway.

Hatch noted the night was dark and it's unclear whether the bicyclist was wearing reflective clothing. He warned that those walking or biking at night should try to be as visible as possible.

A witness who was driving west at the time told police they almost hit the same bicyclist, and it's unclear if the cyclist stopped before crossing the street, Hatch said.

Additional details about the bicyclist, including his name and age, were not immediately available.
