Utah State men's tennis (2-0, 0-0 MW) will compete in two matches in Southern California this weekend, beginning with San Diego (0-0) on Saturday, Jan. 19, at 2 p.m. MT, and UC Irvine (0-0) on Sunday, Jan. 20, at noon.

The Aggies began the season by hosting a doubleheader against Weber State and Idaho State, winning both matches with scores of 7-0 and 6-1, respectively. Against the Wildcats, freshman Isaac Arturo Arevalo won at No. 1 singles (6-3, 6-1), junior Sergiu Bucur won at No. 2 singles (6-1, 6-1), junior Duro Opacic won at No. 3 singles (6-1, 7-5), sophomore Felipe Acosta won at No. 4 singles (6-3, 6-1), sophomore Jose Carvajal won at No. 5 singles (6-2, 6-2) and freshman Rithvik Bollipalli won at No. 6 singles (6-2, 6-4). USU also won the doubles point as Bucur and Bollipalli notched a 6-2 win at the second position, and Acosta and Opacic recorded a 7-6 (7-5) win at the third position.

Against the Bengals, Arevalo won at No. 1 singles (6-4, 6-4), Bucur won at No. 2 singles (0-6, 6-1, 6-2), Opacic won at No. 3 singles (6-4, 2-6, 6-3), Acosta won at No. 4 singles (6-1, 6-1) and Carvajal won at No. 5 singles (6-0, 6-0). USU also won the doubles point as Arevalo and Carvajal posted a 6-1 win at the first position, and Acosta and Opacic recorded a 6-4 win at the third position. Acosta, who went 4-0 last week in combined marks at the matches, was named the MW men's tennis player of the week.

San Diego leads 2-0 in the all-time series Utah State. The Toreros have two players ranked by the ITA in singles play with No. 83 sophomore August Holmgren and No. 117 junior Guo Osorio. Last season, San Diego was led in singles by Holmgren who went 22-8 and Joel Gamerov who went 21-11. The same duo led the Toreros in doubles play with a 17-9 mark.

UC Irvine leads USU, 4-2, in the all-time series, however, the Aggies have won the last two matchups. Last season, the Anteaters were led in singles by Luis Lopez who went 15-8 and Daniel Gealer who went 15-5. Both Lopez and Gealer earned All-Big West Honorable Mention honors in doubles after going 10-5.
