SALT LAKE CITY — BuzzFeed News reported Thursday night that President Donald Trump directed his then-attorney Michael Cohen to lie to Congress about the Moscow Tower project.
According to the report, Trump supported a plan to visit Russia during the presidential campaign to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin to kick-start tower negotiations.
Special counsel Robert Mueller’s office learned about these details through an interview with witnesses from the Trump Organization and internal company emails, texts and documents, according to the BuzzFeed News report. Cohen then acknowledged the instructions during interviews, BuzzFeed report.
Other news organizations, like CNN, The Washington Post and The New York Times, have not backed up this reporting.
According to the Associated Press, "Democrats are vowing to investigate whether President Donald Trump directed his personal attorney Michael Cohen to lie to Congress about a Moscow real estate project."
Reaction: Trump has not reacted yet to the report.
Trump’s lawyer Rudy Giuliani said, “If you believe Cohen I can get you a great deal on the Brooklyn Bridge.”
A White House spokesman did not deny the report in a Fox News interview.
BuzzFeed’s report ignited a spark on Twitter. Members of Congress, pundits and experts spoke out about the report and how it will impact the president.
Texas Rep. Joaquin Castro said, "If the @BuzzFeed story is true, President Trump must resign or be impeached."
Connecticut Sen. Chris Murphy said, "Listen, if Mueller does have multiple sources confirming Trump directed Cohen to lie to Congress, then we need to know this ASAP. Mueller shouldn't end his inquiry, but it's about time for him to show Congress his cards before it's too late for us to act."
California Rep. Ted Lieu said, "Based on the BuzzFeed report and numerous other articles showing @realDonaldTrump committed Obstruction of Justice and other possible felonies, it is time for the House Judiciary Committee to start holding hearings to establish a record of whether @POTUS committed high crimes."
California Rep. Adam Schiff said, "The allegation that the President of the United States may have suborned perjury before our committee in an effort to curtail the investigation and cover up his business dealings with Russia is among the most serious to date. We will do what’s necessary to find out if it’s true."
Texas Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee said, "Incredible. @realDonaldTrump suborned #perjury so that @MichaelCohen212 would lie to #Congress and obstruct its investigation into whether a hostile foreign power subverted our democracy — oh, and his campaign may have colluded, too."
Rhode Island Rep. David Cicilline said, "If the President directed Cohen to lie to Congress, that is obstruction of justice. Period. Full stop."
California Rep. Eric Swalwell said, "MORE evidence of collusion. If @realDonaldTrump directed his lawyer to lie, it was to conceal the underlying allegation from being exposed as true. #TheyColluded."
Hawaii Sen. Brian Schatz said, "I mean everything feels like a bombshell and we are all numb but I’m pretty sure if this story is true it’s — I’m going to be careful with my words here — something that congress must investigate thoroughly."
Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders said, "If this report is true, Donald Trump committed obstruction of justice—a felony and a potentially impeachable offense. I am glad that the House will be investigating this serious issue."
Georgia Rep. Doug Collins said, "It’s disappointing that leaks from law enforcement sources about an admitted liar’s account of his own lies continue to populate the newsfeed and leave us without concrete evidence. I’m still looking forward to the long-anticipated, closely-held report from the Special Counsel."
Colorado Sen. Michael Bennet said, "We can’t let the constant stream of shocking news from this administration make us numb. These allegations are extremely troubling. We need answers."
