The 48-year-old man and his 13-year-old passenger were traveling south in a Toyota 4Runner on I-15 in the carpool lane when they crashed about 12:15 p.m. at the Provo Center Street exit, the Utah Highway Patrol said.

"After traveling too fast for the conditions, the vehicle hydroplaned on the water and drifted to the left through the left emergency lane, striking the concrete barrier with its left front," according to the UHP.

Troopers said the 4Runner rolled several times. The driver died from head injuries at a hospital. His name was not immediately released. The boy sustained minor injuries.

The man and boy were both wearing seat belts at the time of the crash, troopers said.
