GRANTSVILLE — A 2-year-old boy was hit by a vehicle and killed Tuesday, police said.

Tooele County Sheriff's Lt. Travis Scharmann said the accident occurred between 10:30 a.m. and 10:45 a.m at 6900 N. Burmester Road in Grantsville.

The boy was taken to Mountain West Medical Center where he later died.

Scharmann said the driver who hit the boy called 911 and has been cooperative with police. Impairment is not suspected as a factor in the accident, he said.

Police do not know how the boy, whose name was not immediately released, got out of his home, nor how long he'd been outside before family members noticed.

The accident remains under investigation.

Scharmann reminded drivers to mind the speed limit on the road where the accident occurred. The speed limit is 55, but drivers need to be extra cautious because there are homes nearby, he said.

Correction: A previous version incorrectly spelled Tooele County Sheriff's Lt. Travis Scharmann's last name as Scharman.
