The BYU women’s tennis team notched five additional wins on the second day of the Metroplex Mania on Saturday.

“Today was an improvement from yesterday,” BYU women’s tennis head coach Holly Parkinson Hasler said. “Body language was better, we moved and recovered quicker and we fought harder. The girls will rest up tomorrow and be ready to go again Monday morning against SMU.”

The Cougars took two wins in doubles flights. Anastasia Abramyan and Kate Cusick defeated Iowa’s Elise Van Heuvelen Tredwell and Cloe Ruette in first flight doubles, 6-4. In a tight third flight doubles match, Polina Malykh and Madeline Almeida took their second doubles win of the tournament against Northwestern State, 7-6.

Malykh defeated Northern Arizona’s Ellie Millard in second flight singles in a three-set match, 6-1, 3-6, 6-2. Almeida and Samantha Smith maintained their undefeated status in singles matches as well. Almeida took a commanding win over Northern Arizona’s Madi Moore, 6-1, 6-0, in the fourth flight, while Smith fought hard in her third flight match against NAU’s Cora-Lynn von Dungern, 3-6, 6-3, 6-0.

BYU also suffered two losses in doubles flights and four losses in singles flights. Smith and Taylah Beckman fell in second flight doubles to NSU, 7-5, while Morgan Hall and Katie Fitt were defeated by Iowa’s Danielle Burich and Danielle Bauers, 6-1, in the fourth flight.

Abramyan put up a tough fight against NAU’s Chiara Tomasetti, but ultimately she came up short, 6-4, 6-3, in the first flight. In fifth flight singles, Beckman took a loss against NAU’s Emilie Haakansson, 6-1, 7-6. In a hard-fought competition, Fitt fell to an Iowa player, 6-3, 6-4, in the sixth flight, while Hall came up short against Southern Methodist’s Tiffany Hollebeck, 6-2, 6-1, for the seventh flight.

BYU will finish the last day at the Metroplex Mania on Monday. Matches will begin at 10 a.m. CST, and the Cougars will face off against host Southern Methodist University in singles and doubles. Live streaming and live stats will not be available.
