BOUNTIFUL — The forthcoming Bountiful Downtown Plaza is about to get a major wintertime upgrade.
City officials announced the plaza, located at 100 South east of 100 East, will now also feature an outdoor ice skating path or “ribbon.” The refrigerated ice skating ribbon will be constructed by the city and operated by South Davis Recreation District. An interlocal agreement formalizing the partnership between the two agencies was approved late last year.
Mayor Randy Lewis expects the plaza and ice ribbon to be a major draw. “We are thrilled about the activity the ice ribbon will bring to downtown,” he said in a statement. “With this addition, the new plaza will be a unique, year-round attraction for our historic Main Street.”Comment on this story
The plaza and ice facility are to be built throughout the spring and summer of 2019, with a grand opening planned for late fall. Plans for the plaza include a water feature, shaded seating, public restrooms, a small stage and plenty of open space.
The 8,500-square-foot ice ribbon will operate from mid-November through February, weather permitting. During the summer months, it’s anticipated that the concrete path will cater to walkers and roller skaters.
