AMERICAN FORK — The Alpine School District says a man has broken into seven schools over the past six months and vandalized them, causing thousands of dollars in damage to vending machines.
The schools the man broke into include Skyridge, American Fork, Pleasant Grove and Timpanogos high schools, according to a news release from the school district. Lehi and Pleasant Grove junior high schools have also been vandalized, as well as Shelley Elementary.
The series of break-ins has school officials perplexed.
It is unknown how the man entered the buildings — in all of the break-ins, he entered the schools after hours, over the holidays and during weekends. In many of them, he rode in on a bicycle.
Alpine School District spokeswoman Kimberly Bird said the man has caused an estimated $20,000 in damage to 16 different machines, and has taken at least $8,000 from those machines.2 comments on this story
"That's what is the most odd thing about all of this, is that, for the size of the theft and how much damage he did, it's weird. It's odd," Bird said.
After breaking in, the man spray-painted security cameras before pilfering from and vandalizing the vending machines, she said.
School district officials say they are working with local police departments but are asking for the public's help to identify a man seen in surveillance camera photos both inside and outside the schools.
