According to Utah Transit Authority spokesman Carl Arky, the man was trying to cross the tracks at a designated crossing area but appeared not to look and see an approaching train.

The man walked in front of a FrontRunner train that was slowing as it neared the Orem station from the south about 8:20 a.m., Arky said.

Arky said warning signals, including bells and horns, were working at the time.

Family members identified the man as 50-year-old Shane Zaipen.

There were train delays in Utah County for a few hours following the accident, UTA reported.
