SALT LAKE CITY — A “Star Wars” character from “The Empire Strikes Back” will appear in the new live-action series “The Mandalorian.”

What’s going on: The show’s writer and producer Jon Favreau revealed on Instagram that the character IG-88 will appear in the upcoming show, which will be an exclusive property of the Disney+ streaming service.

“Merry Christmas,” Favreau wrote in his post revealing IG-88’s debut.

History: Uproxx notes there’s little information about the droid in the “Star Wars” canon. However, he appears in “Empire Strikes Back” alongside other bounty hunters Boba Fett, Bossk, 4-LOM, Zuckuss and Dengar.

IG-88 has popped up in Disney’s “Forces of Destiny” cartoon and in the “Darth Vader 1” comic book.

Flashback: I reported back on Dec. 13 that the show released its cast, which included Pedro Pascal (“Narcos”), Gina Carano (“Deadpool”), Nick Nolte (“Warriors”), Werner Herzog (“Invincible”), Giancarlo Esposito (Gus from “Breaking Bad”), Carl Weathers (“Rocky”), Emily Swallow (“Supernatural”) and Omid Abtahi (“American Gods”).
