This country was founded on accountable citizen government. Royalty, with its attendant unlimited powers and privileges, is expressly forbidden by the Constitution. The idea that a president could grant pardons for federal crimes committed by his own accomplices and co-conspirators is ridiculous.

Although it’s never been tested in court, the framers would have found the concept too illogical to even consider and prevent through constitutional wording. To have it otherwise would grant the president dictatorial power by allowing minions to commit crimes on his behalf and then be exempt from any consequences through his pardons.

We’ll be watching, Congress.
