The accident occurred while Eugene Eldridge, 60, of West Valley City, who was northbound on I-15 in Bountiful, drifted across the roadway, crossing the on-ramp and continuing off the shoulder where his semitrailer struck a support for an overhead sign, Utah Highway Patrol Lt. Mike McKay said.

Eldridge was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Troopers believe the crash was caused by a medical incident based on the way the vehicle traveled across the road, according to the lieutenant.

The UHP said investigators do not yet know whether Eldridge died as a result of the crash or the medical incident.
