WEST JORDAN — A man died Thursday afternoon after he was shot by an officer who was responding to a domestic incident, police said.
About 4:20 p.m., police responded to the incident involving a man and a woman at a home off of Cherry Leaf Drive, according to West Jordan Police Sgt. J.C. Holt.
At one point, the alleged suspect in the domestic incident got into an altercation with an officer. At least one officer then fired his gun at the man, Holt said, striking and killing him.
Thursday afternoon, Holt said he did not know if the man who died was armed at the time of the shooting.
The man's name was not immediately released pending notification of family.
Holt said the man and woman had previously been in a relationship and used to live together. An infant was inside the home at the time of the incident, Holt said.
West Jordan police are somewhat familiar with the home as they have been called to similar domestic incidents there in the past, the sergeant said.2 comments on this story
He said the officer who shot the man was taken to a hospital for an evaluation according to department protocol, but he is not expected to spend much time there.
The officer has been with the department for less than two years, Holt said.
Unified police will investigate the shooting.
Police remained at the scene at the Liberty Landing housing development near 7000 South into the evening Thursday. West Jordan police said additional information about the incident would not be released until Friday.
Correction: An earlier version incorrectly identified West Jordan Police Sgt. J.C. Holt as a West Valley police sergeant.
