Andrew Payne of Logan participates in the Utah Regional Braille Challenge at the Division of Services for the Blind and Visually Impaired in Salt Lake City on Friday. The 18th annual event, which was hosted by the Utah Foundation for the Blind and Visually Impaired, tests Braille skills in five categories: reading comprehension, Braille spelling, chart and graph reading, proofreading, and Braille speed and accuracy. The 40 Utah students were among more than 1,100 students to participate in the academic competition across North America. The Braille Institute will then bring 50 students with the highest scores per age category from across North America to an annual daylong finals competition in June to test their skills alongside the best of the best.
