Peter Bromberg, executive director of the Salt Lake City Public Library, Mayor Jackie Biskupski and City Council Vice Chairman Chris Wharton blow out candles on a birthday cake as the library celebrates 120 years of service on Wednesday. During the celebration in the Main Library's atrium, Biskupski proclaimed Feb. 14 as Salt Lake City Public Library Day. The first library, which opened in 1898 on the top floor of the City-County Building, featured 11,910 volumes. The library system now houses more than 750,000 items across eight branches, including 3-D printers, laptop computers and Wi-Fi hot spots.
