Calvin H. Giese, 18, of Midway, was charged Monday, Feb. 12, 2018, in 4th District Court with drug distribution after he was found with a large amount of marijuana and marijuana edibles in his vehicle.

HEBER CITY — An 18-year-old high school student has been charged with drug distribution in Wasatch County.

Calvin Herman Giese, of Midway, was charged Monday in 4th District Court with drug distribution, a second-degree felony; drug distribution, a third-degree felony; DUI metabolite and possession of drug paraphernalia, class B misdemeanors; and speeding, a class C misdemeanor.

On Sunday, Giese was pulled over for speeding. A Heber City police officer smelled a "strong odor" of marijuana and a subsequent search of his vehicle resulted in detectives finding marijuana and marijuana edibles such as gummy bears and brownies with pot, according to a statement from police.

Police said a substantial amount of marijuana was seized. On Monday, a spokesman clarified it was substantial for their department — "several dozen items" — but not as big as a typical bust made by Utah Highway Patrol troopers.

Giese is a student at Wasatch High School, according to his Facebook page and several sports rosters. Police said there was no direct evidence Monday that he was planning to sell his supplies to students, but additional leads were being investigated that could lead to more arrests.

A spokesman for the Wasatch School District declined to comment for the story and said he could not confirm Giese is a student in the district.
