ZION NATIONAL PARK — Authorities recovered the body of a woman believed to have fallen while hiking a popular, steep trail in Zion National Park.

A crew found the woman's remains in Refrigerator Canyon along the West Rim Trail about 5 p.m. Monday, park officials said in a statement. The trail is used to reach Angels Landing, a popular point with sheer drops and sweeping views.

An early investigation showed the victim's injuries were consistent with a high-elevation fall, according to the statement.

The woman's age and name were not immediately released as officers sought to determine the cause of death.

Park Superintendent Jeff Bradybaugh called the death "an extremely sad event. Our thoughts go out to this visitor’s family,” he said.

The Washington County Sheriff's Office was investigating, according to the park statement. The sheriff's office could not immediately be reached late Monday.
