Deseret News
Letter to the Editor

Having lost a teenage son to suicide several years ago, I must respectfully disagree with Tom Wagner ("Talking about suicide won't solve the problem," Jan. 25). Since my son died, I have felt that suicide is a double tragedy — first, because it happens, and second, because it is a "taboo" subject that no one wants to talk about.

Comment on this story

Suicide needs to be discussed openly. Thanks to the parents who discuss this topic with their children. Thanks to the Deseret News and others for the courage to bring this subject out in the open. Thanks to Gov. Gary Herbert and others in government who are looking for solutions. And thanks to the schools that have established Hope Squads so the troubled youth have peers they can talk to and get help. Talking will certainly not save everyone, but it will save some. And even one life saved is well worth the effort.
