SALT LAKE CITY — A Murray man accused of shooting another man in the eye claims it was an accident.

Tyler James Dalton, 18, was charged Thursday in 3rd District Court with possession of a weapon by a restricted person, a third-degree felony; reckless endangerment, a class A misdemeanor; and drug possession, a class B misdemeanor.

On Jan. 29, Bryson Ecker was shot in an apartment at 154 W. 4350 South. Not long after the shooting, Dalton was found by Utah Transit Authority police stepping off a TRAX train in the south end of the valley and was arrested.

He told investigators that he and Ecker were friends and were "messing around with guns Ecker recently acquired and showed to Dalton," charging documents state. "Dalton explained he thought he was holding one of the guns when it just went off. Dalton insisted it was an accident."

Emergency responders found two guns on the floor near Ecker.
