MAGNA — A Magna couple was charged Tuesday with child abuse after police say their 10-month-old child was found weighing just 9 pounds.

Loren D. Campbell, 23, and Julia Campbell, 24, are each charged in 3rd District Court with child abuse, a second-degree felony.

In October, a Unified police officer was called to Exodus Health Care Clinic, 3665 S. 8400 West, regarding a baby that had just been transferred to Primary Children's Hospital for malnutrition, according to charging documents.

A nurse reported that two months earlier during a checkup, the child weighed 15 pounds, the charges state. On this visit, the child weighed 9 pounds, according to court documents, and "diagnosed with failure to thrive."

The child was "severely malnourished," according to medical records from Exodus, the charges state, while records from Primary showed the toddler was "admitted as severely malnourished, failure to thrive, developmental delay and concern for neglect," the charges state.

Court documents do not say why the child wasn't receiving food or whether any other children lived in the residence.
