SALT LAKE CITY — Although the American Pie Council — yes, it’s a thing — has sponsored National Pie Day since 1986, the day set aside for honoring the beloved dessert can actually be traced back to around 1975, when Charlie Papazian, a school teacher from Boulder, Colorado, declared his Jan. 23 birthday to be National Pie Day all because of his deep love for pie.
But the celebration of pie doesn’t end in January. In fact, Feb. 9 marks National Pizza Pie Day, and there’s always Pi Day on March 14, which simultaneously celebrates the mathematical constant and tasty desserts — and pizzas.
So this is really just the beginning of celebrating pies in 2018. To get started, here are three places in the Beehive State that are offering discounted pies on Tuesday, Jan. 23.
Penny Ann’s Cafe: With locations in Salt Lake City, Taylorsville and Draper, Penny Ann’s Cafe is celebrating National Pie Day by offering pie lovers a slice of pie for $2 — discounted from the regular price of $3.79. The deal applies to all three locations, and pie options include banana cream, chocolate mousse, key lime, lemon raspberry cream and coconut cream. For those willing to go the extra mile, a free slice of pie is offered for signing up and joining the Penny Ann’s Cafe Club, which can be done through the restaurant’s website.1 comment on this story
Marie Callender's: Marie Callender’s is extending the celebration of National Pie Day to an entire month, offering whole pies to-go at $8.99 through Feb. 28. Although this sale excludes cheesecakes, seasonal fresh fruit pies and promotional pies, dessert enthusiasts still get to choose from a wide variety of more than 30 pies, ranging from apple to blueberry. For a full list of available pies, visit mariecallenders.com.
Village Inn: Village Inn is already known for its free pie Wednesdays, but the restaurant is also offering $2 off any of their whole pies — ranging from lemon supreme to French silk to triple berry, although cheesecake and carrot cake are excluded in this offer, according to the restaurant’s website. No coupon is required and the discount is valid on multiple pie purchases. Call ahead and double-check with your specific location first.
