BERYL, Iron County — A 50-year-old man is dead, police say, after his truck was hit by a train Saturday morning.
The man was dead when police arrived on scene after receiving a call about 8:30 a.m. that a train had hit a truck at about 8400 North and 5600 West, said Iron County Sheriff's Lt. Del Schlosser.
Investigators talked with Union Pacific, which said a train went through that area about 4:30 a.m. "and they did not see the vehicle," according to Schlosser.
"The conductor of the train is cooperating with the investigation," Schlosser said in a statement.
He added that police are "investigating if the vehicle was stuck on the tracks at the time of the accident."
No cargo spilled and the train didn't derail, he said.2 comments on this story
"At this time there are indications of possible alcohol and drug use by the driver of the pickup truck," Schlosser said.
The man's name was not released.
After police were alerted, it took deputies about an hour to arrive on scene due to the location of the accident and weather, Schlosser said. Medical personnel had arrived before police. He said it wasn't clear when police were called whether anyone was inside the truck.
Fire crews were called to the scene to help extract the man's body, he said.
