Congress is failing, but Americans created this mess. The representative form of government for which we fought over 230 years ago has become a mere modern convenience — we are distracted and complacent. Indeed, we do not hold our leaders accountable; their gamesmanship, grandstanding and guile persists. Even worse, we have abandoned prudence for the sake of political power. Yet, these failings strike at the very sinews of democracy. We should remember the tangled web of tyranny we came from and retake our role in a “government of the people, by the people, for the people.”
