Heather Petersen, 23, was driving a Toyota Camry on U.S. 189 near Dock of the Bay at Deer Creek Reservoir about 5:15 p.m. when a Chevy Trailblazer crossed into oncoming traffic, according to the Utah Highway Patrol.

HEBER CITY — A Heber City woman was killed in a nearly head-on collision Monday afternoon.

Heather Petersen, 23, was driving a Toyota Camry on U.S. 189 near Dock of the Bay at Deer Creek Reservoir about 5:15 p.m. when a Chevy Trailblazer crossed into oncoming traffic, according to the Utah Highway Patrol.

The Camry attempted to avoid the Trailblazer, but "the two vehicles collided nearly head-on," the UHP reported. Petersen was pronounced dead at the scene. Jose Francisco Lozoya Tellez, 37, of Heber City, was transported to a local hospital in critical condition.

The investigation into what caused the Trailblazer to go into oncoming traffic was ongoing Tuesday.

On Facebook, friends of Petersen posted messages of condolence.

"Heather Brooke Petersen has returned to her heavenly home. Thank you all for being a part of her life. She had an unforgettable one. We will celebrate her life this Saturday here in Heber," one woman wrote.
