About 5:15 Monday, an SUV traveling northbound near Dock of the Bay restaurant crossed into the southbound lane, crashing "nearly head-on" into a sedan on U.S. 189, the Utah Highway Patrol said in a prepared statement.

The sedan, a Toyota Camry, swerved toward the road shoulder but could not avoid the collision, according to the UHP. Its driver died at the scene.

The driver of the Chevy Trailblazer that crossed into oncoming traffic was in the hospital with critical injuries.

Photos provided by the UHP show a silver Camry that was reduced to rubble. A suburban of the same color could be seen with a crumpled hood.

Troopers late Monday were working to notify family members and determine the cause of the crash.
