MIDVALE — A Sandy man who police say was in the middle of a dark road was hit and killed by a 15-year-old driver with a learner's permit Monday.

The incident happened just after 10 p.m. at 300 East and 8000 South. Jordan Heugly, 23, was crossing the road to go to work when he was hit by a Ford Mustang driven by a 15-year-old boy, said Unified Police Lt. Brian Lohrke.

The driver stopped and immediately called 911, but Heugly was pronounced dead at the scene, Lohrke said.

Investigators say several factors may have contributed to the crash, including speed, fog, rain and the area was poorly lit. The pedestrian was also in the middle of the road and not in a crosswalk, he said.

With a learner's permit, an adult family member is required to be in the car with the driver. Lohrke said the only passenger in the Mutang on Monday was a 16-year-old girl not related to the driver.

The case will be screened by the Salt Lake County District Attorney's Office, which will determine whether to file charges.

According to his Facebook page, Heugly went to Hillcrest High School. His parents manage several assisted living and care facilities in Sandy and Midvale, according to social media. Heugly was reportedly walking to one of those facilities to go to work when he was hit.
