RIVERDALE, Weber County — An Ogden mother charged with locking her children in the trunk of her car was sentenced Thursday to complete community service.
Tori Lee Castillo, who turned 40 this week, pleaded guilty in Riverdale Justice Court to one count of child abuse, a class B misdemeanor, while an identical charge was dismissed.3 comments on this story
Judge Reuben Renstrom suspended a 180-day jail sentence for Castillo so long as she completes 60 hours of community service by March 15, according to court documents.
Castillo was also placed on probation for 12 months and ordered to commit "no similar or like offenses."
According to police, Castillo put her two children, ages 2 and 5, into her car trunk while she went into Walmart in Riverdale on May 25. The children made noises and moved frantically, causing the car to shake and witnesses to call for help.
Good Samaritans who heeded the children's cries instructed the 5-year-old girl to pull the emergency latch in the trunk to escape, police say.
