CENTERVILLE — A 9-year-old boy injured in an accidental shooting in Centerville on Saturday has been released from the hospital.

The boy, who was shot near his shoulder, returned home Tuesday, said assistant Centerville Police Chief Von Steenblik. Due to where the bullet was lodged, doctors opted to leave it for now and did not have to do surgery on the boy, he said.

Emergency crews were called to a home near 1200 North and 225 West, shortly after 6:30 p.m. Saturday. The boy was visiting family members, according to police. The 9-year-old found a handgun in the basement and it went off when his cousins tried to get it away from him, Steenblik said.

The homeowner apparently collects guns, police said. Police found more than 30 rifles in the basement, including some World War II era weapons, Steenblik said. All of the rifles were unloaded. However, he said there were also two handguns in the basement that were loaded and not secured.

As of Tuesday, the gun owner was not facing any charges.
