OREM — A man allegedly exchanged gunfire with officers during a "slow-speed" chase on I-15 late Wednesday, leaving him and a driver who was passing the scene with gunshot wounds, police reported.
Arturo Gallemore-Jimenez, 37, was in a hospital late Wednesday after he was shot multiple times, the Utah County Sheriff's Office said. The extent of his injuries was not known.
The driver of a car passing the scene of the ending gunfight was hit in the shoulder and was expected to recover, said Sheriff's Sgt. Spencer Cannon.
It was not immediately clear whose firearm wounded the driver.
No police officers were injured.
According to Cannon, Gallemore-Jimenez led deputies on a 9-mile, "slow-speed" freeway chase in Utah County. The incident shut down northbound I-15 just south of University Parkway in Orem for hours late Wednesday, where a white pickup truck with bullet holes in the windshield could be seen.1 comment on this story
Cannon said the first report of gunshots was at about 6 p.m. in Nephi, where officers responded to a shooting at a gas station. Deputies tried to make a traffic stop on the truck believed to be involved in that incident about a half-hour later in Springville, Cannon said, when a man fired at them.
The deputies returned fire, then followed the truck at a "slow speed" for 9 miles, during which more rounds were exchanged and the other driver was hit.
Another car carrying a man and his 4-year-old son also was hit by gunfire, but no one in that vehicle was injured, Cannon said.
