WEST VALLEY CITY — State Route 201 was closed for about an hour on Tuesday after a package containing formic acid fell off a UPS truck.
The incident happened just after 11 a.m. The latch on the back door of a UPS truck traveling east on state Route 201 apparently was not secured properly and popped open, said Utah Highway Patrol Sgt. Todd Royce. A package containing 5 liters of formic acid fell onto the road.Comment on this story
Traffic was shut down to prevent cars from driving over the acid. Royce said if cars had driven through it, it could have created an aerosol effect, which could have caused more problems.
Instead, West Valley fire crews were able to quickly neutralize the acid, and the road was reopened about an hour later. No injuries were reported.
Royce said it is legal for hazardous materials to be shipped via UPS and Federal Express in small amounts. He did not know who sent the formic acid in this case or where it was headed.
No other packages were lost or damaged.
