SANDY — A contractor has died after a dirt wall collapsed on him while he was in a trench.

The 42-year-old worker was partially buried when heavy equipment fell on him about 2 p.m. on Friday, the Unified Police Department reported.

It was "just an awful accident that happened today," said Unified Police Lt. Brian Lohrke. He said chunks of concrete and trees also fell on the man.

The contractor, whose name has not been released pending notification of kin, was working in the Granite Ridge neighborhood at the time of the accident.

It's too early to know why the wall caved in, Lohrke said, or if it was properly braced.

Forensic investigators could be seen taking photos of the scene bordered by dirt piles. Police taped off the street in the hilly neighborhood.

No other injuries were immediately reported.
