Investigators block off a portion of a West Valleystreet after a car struck a 7-year-old boy, seriously injuring him Thursday, Dec. 7, 2017, police said.

WEST VALLEY CITY — A 7-year-old boy was in the hospital with serious head injuries Thursday after a car struck him on his way home from school around 4 p.m.

The driver told police that glaring, low sunlight blocked the boy from view, the West Valley City Police Department reported.

The child, whose name was not released, was crossing a side street at 6000 West and 4190 South, just north of Hillside Elementary. The boy was just outside a cross walk, cutting its corner, when he was hit, said Lt. Steve Burke.

The driver was making a right when she realized she hit something, then stopped and saw the child, Burke said. Investigators believe the boy was dragged at least a few feet and sustained head injuries, though he was talking when he was brought to the hospital.

"He's very lucky" Burke said.

The driver helped the boy and later cooperated with police, Burke added. Witnesses said it appeared he was walking alone but that other students were close by, Burke said.

The Granite School District said it would bring in crisis counselors Friday for any students who saw the accident or had concerns.
