OGDEN — The City Council has unanimously approved an ordinance changing the name of the city’s voting areas from municipal wards to municipal districts.

The change in terminology does not alter the boundaries or the number of districts.

“The term ‘municipal ward’ used to define the areas of representation for council members was a point of confusion in the community,” Marcia White, council chairwoman, said in a statement. “Other cities in the state do not use that terminology, and ‘ward’ is often associated with a dominant religion in the area. The change to municipal district is consistent with terminology used in state law.”

The City Council is composed of seven members, four of which represent municipal districts and three who are elected at-large.
