According to the St. Nicholas Center, the saint — and Santa Claus' namesake — was born during the third century in the village of Patara, which is located on the southern coast of today's Turkey. When his wealthy parents died, a young Nicholas used his inheritance to assist the needy. While still a young man, he was made bishop of Myra and became known throughout the land for his generosity to those in need, his love for children, and his concern for sailors and ships. Widely celebrated in Europe, St. Nicholas' feast day has kept alive the stories of his generosity.
