SALT LAKE CITY — National Life Group, an insurance company based in Vermont,, has announced its annual list of Main Streets Across America, a celebration of streets in each of the 50 states and the District of Columbia that embrace a strong sense of community and a commitment to creating an environment where people want to live, work and play.
Utah is represented this year by South Temple in Salt Lake City.
A trip through the Main Streets Across America interactive map reveals many interesting features and facts about these streets and their communities, both current and historical.
“From the historic Union Pacific Depot at one end to the University of Utah campus at the other, South Temple Street is an 18-block landmark of Western history and architecture," notes the Main Streets Across America website, blog.nationallife.com/main-streets.Comment on this story
"Today, the street is home to some 39 historic buildings. And those treasures combine with the avenue’s expansive width, shade trees, bike lanes and well-preserved details like the sidewalks and lampposts to make South Temple a fine, rewarding avenue to explore.”
The streets featured in Main Streets Across America were selected based on four categories — a strong local business presence; community gathering spots and scenic vistas; celebrations of history and traditions, and reflections of civic pride; and diverse social and cultural events and activities.
