WEST VALLEY CITY — Criminal charges were filed Wednesday against a West Valley man believed to be responsible for a shooting in September.Comment on this story
Mario Manuel Ruiz, 30, is charged in 3rd District Court with firing a gun causing serious injury and aggravated robbery, both first-degree felonies; plus aggravated assault and possession of a firearm by a restricted person, second-degree felonies.
About 5 a.m. on Sept. 16, Ruiz went to a West Valley home at 4422 S. Christopherson Drive and demanded his backpack from the victim, the charges state. The victim handed over the backpack plus an extra $40, but was then shot in the abdomen, police say.
The man underwent surgery "for the removal of some of his intestines," according to the charges.
In 2009, Ruiz was convicted of two counts of aggravated robbery and sentenced to five years to life at the Utah State Prison.
