WEST VALLEY CITY — A police officer and two youths were shot in a confrontation at a West Valley City apartment building Tuesday. All three were expected to survive.
A three-year veteran of the West Valley City police force radioed that he had been shot inside the Village at Rivers Edge complex at 1200 West and 3300 South, said West Valley Deputy Chief Matt Elson. The call came in about 7:24 p.m., Elson said.
He did not release the names of the officer or the other two injured during a news conference late Tuesday. Elson also declined to say the extent of the injuries, how many rounds were fired or whether the officer was on duty.
"We're trying to figure out exactly what happened," Elson said. "There's going to be a lengthy investigation."Comment on this story
Unified Police Department will investigate the shooting under West Valley's protocol for officer-involved shootings, Elson said.
Two juveniles with gunshot wounds arrived at a hospital soon after the police officer's call in the same car that police believe was seen leaving the apartment complex, Elson said. Someone else drove the juvenile victims to the hospital, but police do not have any other suspects, Elson said.
Two people who had sustained gunshot wounds were admitted to Intermountain Medical Center late Tuesday, said hospital spokesman Jess Gomez. He declined to release further information.
