SOUTH SALT LAKE — Police say a motorcyclist died following a crash Saturday night with an SUV.

The motorcyclist, a man in his 40s, was driving westbound on 3300 South shortly before 8:30 p.m. when he struck an SUV that had been traveling east on the same road and was turning left into an apartment complex near 1080 West, said South Salt Lake Police Sgt. Matthew Oehler.

The man was transported to a nearby hospital with "extremely critical" injuries and later died, according to Oehler. His name was not immediately released.

Police did not report any serious injuries to the driver of the SUV.

Based on statements from witnesses, the motorcyclist "may have been traveling above the speed limit," Oehler said. An accident reconstruction team was called to the scene to try to piece together what happened.

The man was also not wearing a helmet, Oehler said. The sergeant implored other motorcyclists to wear a helmet, even though it's legal to go without one in Utah.

"Even though it is legal to not have a helmet on, you're taking your life into your own hands and it's a very dangerous risk to do so, as we've seen here tonight," he said.
