MURRAY — Police are looking for a man who walked up to a car in a parking lot, opened the passenger door and shot the driver, who was pronounced dead at a local hospital a short time later.

Officer Kenny Bass of the Murray Police Department said the shooting happened at about 5:30 p.m. when the victim, who remains unidentified, pulled up into the parking lot of Check City at 98 E. 4500 South, Bass said.

After the victim was shot, his car accelerated out of the parking lot and crossed State Street, causing a multi-vehicle accident.

“We’re just lucky at this point that no more people were killed at least,” Bass said. “Unfortunately this individual was.”

Bass said police believe the gunman fled on foot. Law enforcement from multiple agencies responded to the scene.

Bass said evidence at the scene suggests the incident is drug-related. Bass said the shooter is armed, white, wearing a black jacket and light-colored pants.
