SANDY — Police continued Monday to investigate the circumstances surrounding the apparent accidental shooting of a 3-year-old boy and his father at a party.

The incident occurred about 9:45 p.m. Saturday at 122 E. Sego Lily Drive in a new apartment complex.

"A 27-year-old male was handling a firearm which he thought was unloaded. And during that time he was handling it, a gunshot went off, which struck a 3-year-old boy in the arm," said Sandy Police Sgt. Jason Nielsen.

The 3-year-old was standing next to his father. A bullet from a 9 mm handgun went through the boy's arm and struck his 28-year-old father in the leg, Nielsen said. Both victims were taken to a local hospital to be treated for injuries not considered to be life-threatening.

The father was expected to be released from the hospital on Monday and the boy either Monday or Tuesday, he said.

Neither the victims nor the gunman live in the apartment where the shooting occurred. Nielsen said the other occupants immediately called 911 and were being cooperative with investigators.

As of Monday, the man who fired the gun had not been arrested. Nielsen said detectives were still gathering information, including interviews with the man about what he was doing when the shot went off and why a shot was fired.
