HEBER CITY — Crews were fighting several wildfires near Strawberry Reservoir that forced about 25 people from their homes Sunday.

Officials evacuated residents from Soldier Creek Estates, where fire threatened mostly cabins, said Wasatch County Fire Lt. Janet Carson. The Soldier Creek Fire has burned about 600 acres, said Jason Curry, Utah Division of Forestry, Fire & State Lands spokesman.

The Trout Creek Fire also has charred about 200 acres and threatened hunters and campgrounds, fire officials said.

There were five or six fires along a 10-mile stretch of U.S. 40 on Sunday, Curry said. Firefighters from the state, U.S. Forest Service and Wasatch and Summit counties were battling the blazes, he said.

Investigators are trying to determine the cause of the fires and whether they are related.

Curry said firefighting crews and engines are thin because it's late in the year and because of the California wildfires. Fire bosses have had to attack the flames solely from the ground because aerial support isn't available, he said.

"These late-season fires are always a little trickier," Curry said.

Even though it's October, fields are end-of-seaon dry and wildfires are still possible, he said.
