WEST VALLEY CITY — Someone in a gray sedan fired a gun at a boy walking near West Lake Junior High Wednesday afternoon, hurting his hand.

Officers Wednesday afternoon asked for the public's help in identifying a driver and passengers of the small car, possibly a Kia, West Valley City Police Sgt. Jay Horner said. He did not provide information on the weapon the suspects are believed to have used.

The shooting happened about 2:45 p.m., about a half-hour after school let out. The boy was recovering in the hospital Wednesday afternoon.

The car fled after firing multiple times, Horner said, adding that the relationship between the attackers and victim wasn't immediately known. He was not sure if the boy was a student and did not know his age.

Horner said drive-by shootings "don't happen every day. So we're interested in knowing what the motivation was and what brought it about."

Police were seeking to determine whether the violence was gang-related. Their investigation was ongoing.
