The 5th District Judicial Nominating Commission has selected five nominees to fill a vacancy on the court, which covers Beaver, Iron and Washington counties.

SALT LAKE CITY — The 5th District Judicial Nominating Commission has selected five nominees to fill a vacancy on the court, which covers Beaver, Iron and Washington counties.

The position was created by the Legislature during the 2017 session.

The nominees are Matthew Bell, assistant U.S. attorney; Jack Burns, an attorney with Burns Law Office; Washington County deputy attorneys Eric Gentry and Rachelle Shumway; and Jay Winward, an attorney with Winward Law PLLC.

Written comments can be emailed by noon on Monday, Aug. 21, to the Cindy Bulloch, chairwoman of the nominating commission, at judicialvacancies@utah.gov. Comments can also be mailed to: Commission on Criminal and Juvenile Justice, P.O. Box 142330, Salt Lake City, UT 84114-2330.

After the public comment period, the names will be sent to Gov. Gary Herbert, who will have 30 days to make an appointment. The appointee is then subject to confirmation by the Utah Senate.
