CLINTON — A Clinton man was arrested on drug-related charges early Thursday after his wife was found deceased in the basement of their home.

Now, police are trying to determine how long the woman had been dead, how long her husband knew about it, and how she died.

Brandon Corey Weaver, 37, was booked into the Davis County Jail for investigation of several charges, including possession of a weapon by a restricted person and drug possession.

The investigation began Wednesday when the woman's employer called police requesting a welfare check because the woman had not shown up for work, said Clinton Police Lt. Shawn Stoker. An officer responded to the house but no one answered.

Family members later went to the house, and this time Weaver answered the door, Stoker said. They went inside and called police, saying they had located the woman's body.

The 37-year-old woman was found dead in the basement, according to a Davis County Jail booking report. Initially, investigators treated her death as suspicious "based on some of the initial observations" and information given to detectives, Stoker said.

According to a jail booking report, a gun was found near the woman's body. Weaver told police that he and his wife had gotten into an argument Monday. That night, he said "he heard what sounded like a gunshot" coming from the basement, but he did not go downstairs to investigate, the report states.

As the investigation continued Thursday, Stoker said detectives developed additional information and "the death at this point, pending additional information … is not being considered suspicious."

Stoker said he did not know how long the woman, whom police did not name Thursday, had been dead, how many days she failed to show up for work, or whether Weaver knew that his wife was dead in the basement.

"That is something that we are still working through," he said.

Detectives are hoping an autopsy conducted by the Utah State Medical Examiner's Office will provide additional answers.

Police also found drugs in the house — meth and Spice — including some near the woman's body, the report states. Additionally, a motorcycle and car that had been reported as stolen were found in Weaver's yard.

Weaver was charged in April in Clinton Justice Court with intoxication and disorderly conduct, according to court records. He also has a history of burglary and theft-related charges, according to court records.
