SPRINGVILLE — A fire believed to be sparked by lightning in the foothills forced temporary evacuations of up to 30 homes Wednesday, authorities said.

The blaze began about 6:45 p.m. near 1600 North and 400 East, said Springville Police Lt. Warren Foster. It traveled about three-quarters of a mile to the southeast.

Crews doused the flames, but the fire got close enough to some homes that residents were using water from garden hoses to protect their yards.

A Utah Highway Patrol trooper was treated for smoke inhalation at the scene, and no other injuires were reported. No buildings were damaged, Foster said.
