Summer will arrive a week early this year in Ocean City, N.J., according to a tiny hermit crab and a dachshund named Gus The Amazing Weather Dog.

The crab, named Martin Z. Mollusk, was carried to the beach under warm, sunny skies Thursday for the annual ritual in this Jersey resort.Martin "predicted" that summer will arrive June 14 instead of June 21, said city spokesman Mark Soifer.

"For the 13th consecutive year, Martin has seen his shadow," Soifer said. "If it was cloudy, we would use a flashlight to make sure he saw it."

The forecast method is unabashedly similar to that of Punxsutawney Phil, the Pennsylvania groundhog used to predict when spring will arrive.
