Evans & Sutherland Computer Corp. officials Thursday were assessing the damage caused to one of their buildings Wednesday following a water-main break.
A 12-inch pipe burst about 3 p.m., sending several hundred thousand gallons of water into the first and basement floors of the building, 580 S. Arapeen Drive, in the University of Utah Research Park, said Salt Lake Fire Battalion Chief Gordon Nicholl. The main, which feeds the fire-sprinkler systems, broke on the east side of the building. Crews shut off the main about 30 minutes later.
Damage to the building, in the University of Utah Research Park, has been estimated at $1 million, Nicholl said.
Gary Jones, Evans and Sutherland risk manager, said the damage to contents, which includes expensive computer equipment, could reach $1 million.
He speculated that the settling of the 14-year-old building caused the main to break.
