State officials have been barred from revoking the law enforcement certificate of Sam Barlow, a Colorado City, Ariz., deputy marshal, because he practices polygamy.

Maricopa County Superior Court Judge Joseph Howe this week granted Barlow's request for an injunction prohibiting the Arizona Law Enforcement Officers Advisory Council from questioning Barlow's certifi-cation.Howe said that although Barlow's rights to religious freedom are in collision with the Arizona Constitution, which prohibits polygamy, "there's no evidence laws are threatened."

The state law enforcement officers council began investigating Barlow in November 1986 after receiving complaints from some residents of Colorado City, a polygamist enclave on the Arizona-Utah state line.
