Many Brighton High School sophomores will arrive at the magic moment during the coming year - the rite of passage involving driver training and earning licenses.

However, that doesn't mean they will be able to drive to school.A dearth of parking space at the school led the school's community council to adopt a policy barring sophomores access to such space, except in particular circumstances.

Jordan School Board members this week applauded the effort to resolve the issue at the school level.

"They're parking all over the world up there," said Thomas L. Owen, assistant superintendent. The lack of adequate parking at creates a significant neighborhood problem as students park in a nearby church parking lot, on streets and in other unacceptable spots.

Exceptions will be considered on a case-by-case basis for students who are handicapped or have special transportation needs.
